What to Consider When Picking Drapes and Drapery

Drapery hardware includes drapery rods, curtain hooks and rings, end caps or finials, and traverse rails. Some hardware features decorative elements but still fulfills the primary function of enabling drapery to hang loosely, evenly spaced, and without bunching up. When picking drapery hardware, consider a few things.

First, consider if the drapes will hang over a door or window. Then, figure out if the hardware will need to remain stationary and decorative or have some function, such as regularly opening and closing.

For example, sliding glass doors have a standard height of 80 inches. Add four inches to account for the drapes' top hem and hardware, which is not visible outside. Width-wise, sliding doors measure between 60 and 72 inches. Again, add four inches to each side or one side if the draperies only open in a single direction. Adding the inches ensures that the draperies stack entirely off the glass when opened, allowing maximum light.

Use the same method for other home locations, such as corner and bay windows. Pick thicker and sturdier curtain hardware for tall windows, such as rods. The hardware should measure two to three inches in diameter to accommodate heavier, more oversized draperies.
